Weather…

The Schaelsberg is a historically significant hill located near Valkenburg aan de Geul in the Limburg Heuvelland. Rising to about 135 meters above sea level, it has strategic views over the deeply incised Geul Valley. The elevation is most famous for the 'De Kluis' hermitage, founded in 1688 by Count Gerard Hoen van Cartils, which housed hermits for centuries. Geologically, the Schaelsberg is composed of Cretaceous chalk, overlain by layers of loess and flint rubble. During Roman times, the Via Belgica, a major trade route between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Cologne, passed in close proximity to the hill. Today, the Schaelsberg is a prominent recreational area known for its botanical diversity, including rare chalk grassland flora. The surrounding woodlands and traditional orchards are hallmarks of this cultural landscape. Annual religious processions to the hermitage continue to highlight the site's enduring cultural and spiritual importance.
