Venlo is a historical city in the northern part of the province of Limburg, holding significant importance as a logistics and trade hub due to its location on the German border and the Meuse river. The city's origins trace back to the Roman era when it was known as Sablones and served as a key station on the Roman road from Xanten to Maastricht. During the Middle Ages, Venlo was an influential member of the Hanseatic League, which bolstered the city's wealth and is still visible today in grand buildings such as the late-Gothic town hall on the market square. The city gained international attention in 2012 as the host of the Floriade world horticultural expo, the site of which has since been transformed into an innovative business park. Today, Venlo is primarily known for its cross-border shopping tourism and its state-of-the-art logistics industry, which makes extensive use of the river port and rail links. The city's cultural depth is highlighted by the Museum van Bommel van Dam for modern art and the Limburgs Museum for regional history.
