Geleen, located in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg, is a city with a rich industrial past that has evolved into a hub of innovation. Originally a small agricultural settlement, Geleen underwent a profound transformation in the 20th century with the establishment of the Maurits State Mine, once the largest coal mine in Europe. Following the closure of the mines in the 1960s, the city made a successful transition to the chemical industry. Today, Geleen is home to the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, a bustling hub for research and development in chemistry and materials. The city, along with Sittard, forms the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Visitors can explore the city's heritage in the former miners' quarters or enjoy the modern city center with its shops and cafes. The region is known for its 'vlaai' and local beers. Geleen is well-connected transport-wise, with easy access to the A2 and A76 motorways and a train station providing links to Maastricht and other Dutch cities.
