Renkum is a municipality in the province of Gelderland, picturesquely situated on the north bank of the Lower Rhine (Nederrijn) at the edge of the Veluwe forest. The town possesses a significant industrial heritage, primarily centered around paper production; as early as the 18th century, paper mills utilized the region's clear streams for power and processing. This evolved into large-scale industrial operations in the 19th century, most notably with the establishment of the Van Gelder company. Historically, Renkum is also recognized as a key site during Operation Market Garden in September 1944, when Allied paratroopers landed in the nearby woods, leading to intense combat and severe damage to the town. Today, Renkum is valued for its high standard of living and proximity to nature reserves like the Renkumer Beekdal, which has undergone extensive ecological restoration. The municipality includes several villages, such as Oosterbeek, home to the internationally famous Airborne Museum Hartenstein.
