Elspeet Hill (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Elspeet Heath (Elspeetse Heide) is one of the most extensive and best-preserved heath landscapes of the Veluwe in the province of Gelderland. This hilly relief is geomorphologically shaped by glacial moraine remains and post-glacial drifting sand formations. The heath is not only ecologically valuable but also holds significant archaeological treasures, including numerous Bronze Age burial mounds that testify to early settlement. Traditionally, the area was kept open through sheep grazing, a practice continued today by the Elspeet sheep flock for the maintenance of the cultural landscape. The gentle hills provide a habitat for specialized species such as the European nightjar and the common European adder. Due to its relative isolation, an authentic image of the old Dutch heath landscape has been preserved here, largely free from modern infrastructure.
