The Zevenheuvelen (Seven Hills) area near Nijmegen is one of the most distinctive hilly landscapes in the Netherlands, situated between Groesbeek and Berg en Dal. The region was formed during the Saale glaciation about 150,000 years ago, when advancing glaciers pushed the earth into high moraine ridges. The area takes its name from the Zevenheuvelenweg, a famous road that traverses seven distinct waves in the terrain. This locality is internationally renowned for the 'Zevenheuvelenloop,' one of the world's premier 15-kilometer road running events. During World War II, the undulating topography played a critical role in Operation Veritable in 1945, as Allied forces staged their advance toward the Rhine from these heights. Today, the landscape is characterized by a mix of dense forests, vineyards, and open fields. The region provides excellent conditions for viticulture on mineral-rich loess soils and remains a favorite destination for both cyclists and hikers.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
