Coevorden is a historic fortress town in the province of Drenthe, its origins deeply rooted in its strategic position at the junction of major trade routes and a ford (Voorde) through the surrounding marshlands. In the late 16th century, the town was redesigned according to plans by Maurice of Nassau and Menno van Coehoorn as a good fortress in the shape of a seven-pointed star with a radial street system. Coevorden Castle, the only castle in the province of Drenthe, served for centuries as the seat of the burgraves and remains a prominent landmark today. During the Eighty Years' War, the city was fiercely contested, changing hands several times between Spanish and Dutch forces. In the 19th century, Coevorden benefited from the construction of the Overijsselse Vecht canal and developed into a significant industrial hub. Today, the city blends its rich military history with modern urban planning, acting as an economic center on the border with Germany. The preserved ramparts and moats offer a glimpse into the city's former defensive strength.
