Every June the Vechtpark in Hardenberg fills a whole month with waterside activities, highlighted by a balloon festival with dozens of hot-air balloons.
Hardenberg is a city in the province of Overijssel, situated in the scenic Vecht river valley near the German border. The city was granted municipal rights in 1362 by the Bishop of Utrecht and functioned as a fortified stronghold during the Middle Ages. A pivotal historical event was the Battle of Ane in 1227, which took place nearby and had significant consequences for the bishop's rule in the region. In modern times, Hardenberg has evolved into a vital regional center, noted for its innovative municipal administration and commitment to sustainability. The cityscape features a unique mix of contemporary architecture, such as the striking town hall, and historical remnants of the ancient city walls. The surrounding area gives extensive nature reserves and hiking trails along the Vecht, making Hardenberg a hub for eco-tourism. Today, the city is also nationally recognized as a host for major trade fairs and exhibitions at the Evenementenhal complex.
