The city was granted its official rights in 1248 and served as a strategic trading post on the routes between Germany and the western Netherlands during the Middle Ages. A significant part of Ommen's identity is its deep connection to the Scouting movement; Gilwell Ada's Hoeve has been an international scouting center since 1923.
