Kangchenjunga (Nepal)

Weather…

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,586 metres, and the highest in Nepal. It is located on the border of Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim. Its name means 'The Five Treasures of the Great Snow', which refers to its five main peaks. The mountain and its surroundings are part of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, a region of immense biodiversity with alpine grasslands, subtropical forests, and a rich fauna including snow leopards and red pandas. Kangchenjunga is considered a sacred mountain by the local communities, and out of respect, most expeditions stop just short of the actual summit. The region is remote, and treks here are challenging and less frequented than those in the Everest or Annapurna regions.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Usually accessed via the eastern side from Sikkim or the western side from Nepal, requiring multi-day travel involving domestic flights and long, rugged jeep rides to the trailheads.
📅
Best season
Pre-monsoon (April to May) and post-monsoon (October to November) are the typical trekking windows, offering the clearest mountain views and avoiding the severe winter snows and summer rains.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is incredibly demanding, featuring steep mountain passes, moraines, high-altitude alpine tundras, and deep river gorges that require excellent physical fitness to navigate.
🎒
What to bring
High-altitude trekking demands comprehensive mountaineering equipment, sturdy four-season boots, extreme cold-weather clothing, trekking poles, and reliable altitude sickness remedies.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are left at the respective trailheads in Nepal or India; the actual circuits and base camp treks are accessible strictly on foot, making personal vehicle parking irrelevant for the trek itself.
⚠️
Safety
Altitude sickness is a severe and realistic threat on these routes; trekkers must acclimatize properly, travel with experienced guides, and be prepared for rapid, harsh weather changes.
⏱️
Time needed
Trekking to either the Nepal or Sikkim base camps is a massive undertaking, typically requiring anywhere from 14 to 28 days depending on the specific route and necessary acclimatization rest days.
