Kolkata Port (India)

Weather…

Kolkata Port, officially renamed the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, is India's only major riverine port and features a storied history spanning over 150 years. Located on the banks of the Hooghly River, about 203 kilometers inland from the sea, it served as the premier gateway of the British Raj and remains a vital hub for Eastern India. Due to the challenges of siltation in the river, the port operates a complex impounded dock system and maintains a second, deep-water facility at Haldia for handling larger vessels and bulk commodities. It acts as the primary maritime outlet for landlocked neighbors like Nepal and Bhutan, as well as the mineral-rich hinterland of West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Historically significant for the export of tea and jute, today it also handles large volumes of coal, steel, and containers. Despite the geographical constraints of the riverine navigation, the port continues to innovate with night navigation systems and terminal automation, ensuring its continued importance in South Asia's trade landscape.
