Ilam Tea Gardens
Ilam Tea Gardens are located in eastern Nepal, in Ilam District, near the border with India. Ilam is renowned for producing high-quality tea, mainly orthodox black tea, but also green and white tea. The tea gardens stretch at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,000 meters above sea level, creating good conditions for tea cultivation. The first tea plantation was established in 1863 by Colonel George Ramsay. Today, there are over 20 tea gardens in the region. The most famous is Kanyam Tea Garden. Ilam tea is hand-plucked and processed using traditional methods. The region is also known for its humid climate and misty mornings. The tea gardens are a popular tourist destination, offering visitors insights into tea production. The local economy is heavily dependent on tea cultivation.
