Victoria Memorial (India)

Weather…

The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata is a grand white marble building dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria following her death in 1901. Designed by architect Sir William Emerson, the structure represents a blend of British neoclassical styles with Indo-Saracenic elements, including Mughal-inspired domes and turrets. The construction was funded largely by donations from Indian princes and the public, and it was formally opened to the public in 1921. Today, the memorial functions as a museum housing a vast collection of colonial-era paintings, manuscripts, and historical artifacts. It is set amidst 64 acres of sprawling gardens designed by Lord Redesdale, providing a serene environment in the heart of the city. Atop the central dome stands the 16-foot tall bronze statue of the 'Angel of Victory,' which rotates with the wind. It remains one of the most prominent architectural remnants of the British Raj in India.
