Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is located in the eastern Terai of Nepal, covering 175 square kilometers across the Sunsari, Saptari, and Udayapur districts. Established in 1976, it was primarily created to protect the last remaining population of wild water buffaloes, known locally as Arna, in Nepal. The reserve lies on the floodplains of the Koshi River and consists of expansive grasslands, marshes, and riverine forests. It is internationally recognized as a premier bird-watching destination, situated on a major flyway for migratory birds, with over 485 species recorded to date. Because of its ecological significance, it was designated as Nepal's first Ramsar site in 1987. The vegetation is dominated by Dalbergia sissoo and Acacia catechu trees, alongside tall elephant grass. The ecosystem is highly dynamic, being reshaped annually by the monsoon floods of the Koshi River, which create numerous sandy islands and seasonal wetlands. The reserve also serves as a critical habitat for various reptiles, including the gharial crocodile and the Gangetic dolphin.

Getting there
The reserve is typically accessed from the nearest regional towns, which serve as transport hubs for the wetland area. Visitors usually take a local bus or arrange for a private jeep to reach the main entrance gate.
Best season
The best time to visit is during the dry season from October to March when the weather is pleasant and migratory birds arrive. Monsoon season brings heavy rains and flooding, making exploration quite difficult.
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists mostly of flat wetlands, marshy islands, and riverbanks alongside the Sapta Koshi River. Exploring is done primarily by foot on relatively level trails, though muddy conditions are very common.
What to bring
Essential items include a good pair of waterproof boots, strong insect repellent, and lightweight breathable clothing. Birdwatchers should definitely bring a high-quality pair of binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens.
Parking
Most visitors leave their vehicles at the reserve headquarters or designated entry points in nearby villages. It is advisable to coordinate transport with your accommodation provider or hire a driver who waits nearby.

Always stay alert for wild animals near the water's edge, keeping a safe distance at all times. Hiring a knowledgeable local guide is highly recommended to safely navigate the wetland environment and avoid sudden deep water.
