Lukla
Lukla is a bustling town in the Khumbu region that serves as the primary gateway for those venturing toward Mount Everest. It is world-renowned for the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, often cited as the most dangerous in the world due to its short, uphill runway perched on a mountain shelf. The town is filled with a sense of anticipation as trekkers prepare for their high-altitude journey or celebrate their return. Lukla is surprisingly well-equipped with lodges, trekking gear shops, and modern bakeries. It is the excellent place to double-check equipment before heading further into the Sagarmatha National Park. The local food scene features Tibetan specialties like Sherpa stew and Thukpa alongside international dishes. Most people arrive via a thrilling flight from Kathmandu. The best visiting times are during the trekking windows in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), though one should always budget extra days for weather-related flight delays.
