Epupa Falls
Epupa Falls is one of the most remarkable natural wonders in northern Namibia. The name 'Epupa' is derived from the Herero language, meaning 'falling water.' Here, the Kunene River, which forms the border between Namibia and Angola, widens and plunges into a deep gorge over a series of cascades stretching about 500 meters across. The site is a true desert oasis, where ancient baobab trees cling to the rocky cliffs and lush Makalani palms line the riverbanks, creating a vivid contrast with the surrounding arid mountains. Visitors are drawn to Epupa for its wide-open scenery, diverse birdlife, and the opportunity to hike along the rim of the falls for various vantage points. The area is also deeply connected to the Himba people, one of Africa's most iconic semi-nomadic tribes. Visiting a nearby Himba village allows travelers to experience their unique culture and age-old traditions firsthand. The roar of the water and the mist rising from the gorge, especially at sunset, lend an ethereal quality to this remote destination. Reaching Epupa involves a long journey through the rugged Kaokoveld on gravel roads, making a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle essential. There are several campsites and lodges situated directly on the riverbank, providing a shady retreat from the Namibian sun. The best time to visit is from April to May when the Kunene River is at its highest flow following the rains, making the falls particularly powerful. However, swimming is strictly discouraged due to the presence of Nile crocodiles.
