Iona National Park, covering over 15,000 square kilometers in the southwestern Namibe province, is the largest national park in Angola. It is an extension of the Namib Desert, characterized by vast, arid plains, imposing sand dunes meeting the Atlantic Ocean, and rugged mountain ranges. The park is a harsh but beautiful environment, renowned for its geological formations and unique desert-adapted flora. One of the primary botanical attractions is the Welwitschia mirabilis, a prehistoric plant species that can live for over a thousand years. While wildlife populations were severely depleted during the civil war, conservation efforts have led to the return of springbok, oryx, ostriches, and occasionally cheetahs. Visitors can also encounter the semi-nomadic Himba and Mucubal indigenous peoples who maintain their traditional pastoral lifestyles within the park's boundaries. Accessing Iona requires a robust 4x4 vehicle, usually embarking from the coastal city of Moçâmedes, which is about 200 kilometers away. There is minimal infrastructure, so visitors must be fully self-sufficient with fuel, water, and camping gear. The cooler months from May to August are the best time to visit, as summer temperatures in the desert can reach extreme and dangerous levels.
