Walvis Bay Salt Holdings (Namibia)

Weather…

Walvis Bay Salt Holdings is the largest producer of salt in sub-Saharan Africa. The company operates vast salt pans south of Walvis Bay, covering an area of several thousand hectares. The production process is similar to that in Swakopmund but on a much larger scale. Seawater from the Walvis Bay lagoon is channelled through a series of evaporation ponds. The company produces over 900,000 tonnes of raw salt annually. A large portion of the production is chemical-grade industrial salt, which is mainly exported to South Africa for use in the chlor-alkali industry. High-quality table salt is also produced. The salt pans are of international importance as a Ramsar wetland site, providing a vital habitat for tens of thousands of migratory birds, including one of southern Africa's largest concentrations of flamingos.
