Rhenish Mission Church Walvis Bay (Namibia)

Weather…

The Rhenish Mission Church in Walvis Bay is the oldest surviving building in the town and a significant witness to mission history in Southern Africa. It was prefabricated in 1880 in Hamburg, Germany, and subsequently transported in sections by ship to Namibia. The assembly on site was completed in 1881; the building originally stood directly at the harbor before being moved to its current location. Constructed of wood in the Neo-Gothic style, the extremely arid coastal climate has aided its preservation for over 140 years. For decades, it served as the spiritual center for the diverse populations of the port town and is closely linked to the work of the Rhenish Missionary Society. Today, it functions as a national monument and museum, providing insights into the colonial past and the religious development of the region. Its modest wooden architecture provides a striking contrast to the modern industrial environment of the surrounding harbor.
