Sandwich Harbour

Sandwich Harbour is one of Namibia's most visually arresting locations, situated within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It is where the towering dunes of the world's oldest desert meet the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean in a spectacular collision of sand and sea. Once a commercial port for whaling and fishing, the harbour has since been reclaimed by nature, with its freshwater lagoon now serving as a critical wetland for thousands of migratory birds, including greater and lesser flamingos. Reaching this remote wilderness is an adventure in itself, accessible only via a thrilling 4x4 drive with professional guides. The route often involves navigating the narrow strip of beach between the towering dunes and the incoming tide, requiring precise timing. The highlight for many is the ascent to the top of the massive sand walls, offering a panoramic view of the 'Sand Sea' stretching to the horizon on one side and the vast ocean on the other. Wildlife enthusiasts will find much to admire beyond the birdlife. The dunes are home to desert-adapted species such as black-backed jackals, springbok, and the elusive brown hyena. While visits are possible year-round, early mornings usually provide the calmest winds and best photographic light. Most tours depart from Walvis Bay, offering half-day or full-day excursions that often conclude with a scenic picnic among the dunes.
