The Namib Desert, stretching along Namibia's Atlantic coast, is widely considered the oldest desert on Earth, with an estimated age of 55 to 80 million years. It spans over 2,000 kilometers in length and is world-famous for its towering red sand dunes, some of which exceed 300 meters in height at Sossusvlei. A defining ecological feature is the coastal fog generated by the interaction between warm desert air and the cold Benguela Current, providing the primary source of moisture for its specialized inhabitants. The flora includes the remarkable Welwitschia mirabilis, a plant capable of living for more than 1,500 years in hyper-arid conditions. Geographically, the desert is divided into the vast southern dune sea and the northern gravel plains. In 2013, the 'Namib Sand Sea' was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its unique geomorphology and biodiversity. Despite its extreme aridity, the Namib supports a surprising variety of endemic insects, reptiles, and large mammals like the gemsbok.
