Tucked away along a broad bay on the Indian Ocean, the town was traditionally a quiet settlement where residents relied primarily on fishing and subsistence farming. In recent years, Palma gained international prominence following the discovery of massive offshore natural gas reserves near the Afungi Peninsula. This development represents one of the largest private investments in Africa, intended to economically transform the region. However, progress has been significantly hampered by severe security challenges and insurgent attacks, leading to large-scale displacement and the temporary suspension of major gas projects. Geographically, Palma is surrounded by dense forests and mangroves, and it is strategically located for cross-border trade with neighboring Tanzania. The cultural makeup of the town is diverse, with strong Swahili influences reflected in both the local architecture and daily language.
