Forte de Santo António (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Forte de Santo António is one of the smaller yet historically significant defensive structures on Ibo Island. Built in the 18th century (reconstructed around 1770), it was designed to protect the harbor and the southern approach to the island. The fort features a square floor plan and is more modest in size compared to the larger Fortaleza de São João Baptista. Nevertheless, it played a vital role in securing the Quirimbas Archipelago against maritime threats. Its walls are constructed from local coral limestone and house a small chapel and quarters for the guard. Its position directly on the water's edge makes it a pretty spot that connects the island's military history with the natural coastal panorama. It recalls the era when Ibo was a prosperous trading hub for gold, ivory, and slaves, documenting the Portuguese efforts to permanently fortify their commercial outposts in the Indian Ocean.
