The Fortaleza de São João Baptista on Ibo Island is the largest and most significant defensive structure in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Completed in 1791, the star-shaped fortress was built to defend against pirate raids and to secure Portuguese control over the lucrative slave and ivory trade in the region. The massive complex housed a military garrison, administrative offices, and storage facilities. During the later colonial period, particularly during the Mozambican struggle for independence, the fort was repurposed as a prison for political dissidents. Its architecture is characterized by high limestone walls and angular bastions providing strategic views over the Indian Ocean. Today, the fortress stands as a historical monument and hosts local silversmiths famous for their intricate filigree work. The preservation of the fort is vital to the cultural heritage of Ibo, which once served as the second most important town in Portuguese East Africa.
