Ibo is a historic island town within the Quirimbas Archipelago, located off the coast of Cabo Delgado Province in northern Mozambique. The island has a long and turbulent history dating back to the 15th century, when it served as a major trading post for ivory, gold, and enslaved people. During the Portuguese colonial era, Ibo was designated the capital of Cabo Delgado District in 1763, a status it maintained until 1904. The island's architecture is characterized by hauntingly beautiful colonial ruins, grand villas, and three formidable forts, with the Fort of São João Baptista being the most prominent. Ibo is world-renowned for its traditional silversmiths who craft intricate filigree jewelry from old silver coins using centuries-old techniques. Currently, the island is part of the Quirimbas National Park, drawing travelers seeking a blend of historical decay, rich cultural heritage, and pristine marine environments. The traditional way of life, centered on fishing and maritime trade, has remained largely unchanged for generations.
