The Merzouga Dunes, also known as Erg Chebbi, are one of Morocco's most iconic sand seas, located near the Algerian border. This vast expanse of golden-orange sand stretches approximately 22 kilometers from north to south and reaches a width of up to 5 kilometers. The highest peaks of the dunes soar majestically to heights of 150 meters above the surrounding flat desert floor, known as the hamada. Geologically, these formations resulted from wind-borne deposits of river sands brought by the Oued Ziz over thousands of years. The color of the sand shifts remarkably throughout the day, ranging from pale yellow in the morning to deep crimson during sunset. The village of Merzouga at the base of the dunes is the primary gateway for desert exploration and is notable for its ancient subterranean irrigation systems called khetaras. Nearby, the seasonal Dayet Srji lake appears after rainfall, attracting flamingos and various migratory bird species. For the local Gnawa and Berber communities, the Erg is not just a landmark but a site of spiritual significance and traditional healing practices, such as sand baths.
