Merzouga Dunes (Morocco)

Weather…

The Merzouga Dunes, also known as Erg Chebbi, are one of Morocco's most iconic sand seas, located near the Algerian border. This vast expanse of golden-orange sand stretches approximately 22 kilometers from north to south and reaches a width of up to 5 kilometers. The highest peaks of the dunes soar majestically to heights of 150 meters above the surrounding flat desert floor, known as the hamada. Geologically, these formations resulted from wind-borne deposits of river sands brought by the Oued Ziz over thousands of years. The color of the sand shifts remarkably throughout the day, ranging from pale yellow in the morning to deep crimson during sunset. The village of Merzouga at the base of the dunes is the primary gateway for desert exploration and is notable for its ancient subterranean irrigation systems called khetaras. Nearby, the seasonal Dayet Srji lake appears after rainfall, attracting flamingos and various migratory bird species. For the local Gnawa and Berber communities, the Erg is not just a landmark but a site of spiritual significance and traditional healing practices, such as sand baths.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The dune area is traditionally approached from nearby desert settlements, acting as the gateway where visitors arrange guided camel treks or robust off-road transport to cross the immediate sandy borders.
📅
Best season
Winter and the transitional shoulder seasons of spring and autumn provide optimal weather conditions, effectively avoiding the scorching summer heat that dominates the region during the middle part of the year.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect vast stretches of soft, wind-sculpted sand where elevation changes constantly; walking up the steep dune ridges demands significant physical effort due to the loose and shifting nature of the ground.
🎒
What to bring
Essential items encompass strong sun protection, a long scarf to guard the face against flying dust, breathable layers that adapt to extreme day-to-night temperature swings, and a dependable supply of hydration.
🅿️
Parking
Secure parking is almost always organized through the accommodations situated along the edge of the dunes, allowing travelers to safely store their rental vehicles before embarking on desert excursions.
⚠️
Safety
While the area is popular, the desert environment remains unforgiving; visitors must employ the services of experienced local guides to prevent getting lost and strictly follow advice regarding heat exposure and dehydration.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors dedicate at least one full evening and overnight stay to fully appreciate the majestic desert sunset and the incredible star-filled sky, returning to civilization the following morning.
