Sijilmasa Ruins (Morocco)

Weather…

The ruins of Sijilmasa are located on the outskirts of the town of Rissani and mark the site of what was once one of the most important trading cities in the Islamic world. Founded in 757 AD by the Midrarid dynasty, Sijilmasa served for centuries as the northern terminus for the great trans-Saharan caravan routes bringing gold, ivory, and slaves from West Africa. Its strategic location within the Tafilalet oasis basin made it a coveted prize for major Moroccan dynasties, including the Almoravids and Almohads. The city was legendary for its immense wealth, lush gardens, and advanced irrigation systems. A gradual decline began in the 14th century, leading to the city's eventual abandonment in the 19th century. Today, only fragments of the massive mud-brick structures and gates are visible, yet they still exude a fascinating aura of past power. Archaeological excavations have provided valuable insights into medieval urban life and intercontinental trade. Furthermore, Sijilmasa is regarded as the cradle of the current Alawite dynasty, giving the site significant national importance.
