Ziz (Morocco)

Weather…

The Oued Ziz is a vital river in southeastern Morocco, originating in the High Atlas Mountains and flowing southward toward the Sahara Desert. Spanning approximately 280 kilometers, the river has carved deep, dramatic limestone canyons over millennia, creating the renowned Ziz Valley. It serves as the primary lifeline for the Tafilalt oases, one of the world's largest contiguous palm groves. The river's flow is managed by the Hassan Addakhil Dam near Errachidia, which regulates water supply for regional agriculture and mitigates the effects of periodic droughts. The banks of the Ziz are dotted with numerous traditional fortified villages known as ksour, underscoring the valley's historical significance as a major caravan trade route between the Sahara and northern Morocco. Geologically, the valley features impressive Jurassic and Cretaceous rock formations. The river eventually flows into Algeria, where it joins the Oued Daoura basin before its waters dissipate into the desert sands.

Getting there
The Ziz river is easily reached during a drive into southern Morocco, typically starting from the city of Errachidia. Along the main artery towards the desert, there are multiple access points to the oasis.
📅
Best season
Visits are most rewarding between autumn and spring when temperatures remain moderate. In summer, the heat in the region becomes extreme, making walks along the river highly strenuous.

Terrain & paths
The immediate river environment is characterized by fertile palm groves, while the surrounding land is stony and desert-like. Paths through the oasis are mostly shaded, dirt-based, and relatively flat.
🎒
What to bring
Light, breathable footwear is good for navigating the oasis paths. Even though the palm trees offer shade, sun protection, a head covering, and plenty of drinking water are mandatory in your pack.

Parking
Numerous viewpoints on the main road above the oasis offer official parking bays. Those wishing to get closer to the river can often leave their car along the edge of the small access roads.
⚠️
Safety
There is little danger within the oasis, but maintain good orientation as the many small paths can be confusing. Be cautious near the steep edges of viewpoints looking over the valley.
