Ziz Valley (Morocco)

Weather…

The Ziz Valley is one of Morocco's most spectacular oasis landscapes, stretching from the High Atlas to the Tafilalt region at the edge of the Sahara. Over millennia, the Oued Ziz has carved deep canyons into the limestone of the Atlas before opening into a vast palm oasis. This oasis is home to millions of date palms and forms a green ribbon that provides a sharp contrast to the surrounding desert landscape. Historically, the valley was part of the Sijilmasa trade route, through which gold and slaves from West Africa were transported north. Inhabitants utilize a complex system of irrigation canals to render the arid soil fertile. The Hassan Addakhil reservoir now regulates the river's flow and protects the oases from devastating floods. The traditional architecture of the ksours in the valley testifies to the defensive needs and communal lifestyle of the local population.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The river valley runs parallel to the national road that leads from the mountains down into the Sahara. There are numerous signposted stopping points from which one can descend into the extensive oases.
📅
Best season
The winter and spring months offer the best climate for exploration, as the sun is significantly less intense. In mid-summer, enormous heat tends to accumulate between the rocky walls of the valley.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The valley presents striking contrasts: rugged, rocky slopes dropping into a flat riverbed laced with lush palm forests. The walkways at the bottom are mostly sandy and bordered by traditional mud walls.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear is important for safely navigating the sometimes uneven descents from the road into the valley. Plenty of drinking water, sunglasses, and a hat are indispensable in this near-desert region.
🅿️
Parking
At the panoramic viewpoints high above the valley, spacious, paved parking areas have often been created for travelers. Within the valley villages, cars can usually be parked on sandy village squares.
⚠️
Safety
Exercise caution near the unsecured edges of the viewing platforms along the main road. When hiking in the valley below, ensure you always carry enough water to strictly avoid dehydration.
⏱️
Time needed
A brief stop for photographs from the viewpoints rarely exceeds 30 minutes. However, those embarking on a walk through the extensive palm groves should allocate two to three hours for the experience.
