Vladika Palace Cetinje (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Vladika Palace in Cetinje, widely known as Biljarda, was the official residence of the renowned Montenegrin Prince-Bishop and poet Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. Built in 1838 by Russian architect Yakov Ozerețkovsky, the palace marked a significant shift from traditional monastic living to a more secular and centralized form of governance in Montenegro. The name 'Biljarda' is derived from the country's first billiard table, which Njegoš had transported from Vienna, symbolizing his interest in European culture. The building's architectural style is defensive, featuring a rectangular layout with four corner towers and thick stone walls that gave it the appearance of a small fortress. Beyond being a residence, it functioned as the seat of the Senate and various state offices. Today, Biljarda serves as a museum dedicated to Njegoš’s legacy, housing his personal effects, original manuscripts of 'The Mountain Wreath,' and a massive topographic relief map of Montenegro created in 1917.
