Goražda Fortress (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Goražda Fortress is one of the best-preserved Austro-Hungarian forts in Montenegro, strategically perched on a hill between Kotor and Tivat. Built between 1884 and 1886, its primary mission was to monitor the Bay of Kotor and control the vital mountain pass leading to Cetinje, then the Montenegrin capital. The fortress's most remarkable feature is its rare 'Gruson' rotating armored turret, a technological marvel of its time that provided a 100-degree field of fire. Designed to be inconspicuous, much of the fortress is sunken or carved directly into the bedrock, shielding it from enemy artillery observation. Inside, the well-preserved casemates, ammunition stores, and ventilation systems reflect the pinnacle of 19th-century military engineering. Today, Goražda is open to the public, offering a fascinating look at historical defense strategies and providing wide-open views over Tivat airport and the surrounding coastal landscape.
