The Cetinje Karst Landscape is a quintessential example of the geomorphological features of the Dinaric Alps in Montenegro. The region surrounding the country's former capital is defined by extreme soil permeability, leading to the formation of numerous sinkholes, caves, and complex underground drainage systems. The Cetinje Field (Cetinjsko polje) is one of the nation's most famous karst poljes, situated at an elevation of approximately 670 meters above sea level. Due to the fractured limestone bedrock, surface water is virtually non-existent as rainfall immediately infiltrates the ground, a factor that historically posed significant challenges for local water management and settlement. This unique geological setting has fostered a resilient flora adapted to dry surface conditions. Nearby, the Lipa Cave system showcases the spectacular subterranean formations of the karst world, featuring intricate stalactites and stalagmites that draw researchers and tourists alike.
