💡 Tips
- Boat tours usually depart from Virpazar; arrive early in the morning to negotiate better prices before the crowds arrive.
- There is a national park entrance fee that should be included in your boat tour price, but double-check with the captain.
- The lake is heavily covered in water lilies in summer; small wooden cuns (traditional boats) navigate these better than larger vessels.
- The panoramic road towards Ostros features sweeping views but is essentially a single lane with two-way traffic; drive very carefully.
- If you plan to swim, water shoes are recommended as the shoreline can be rocky or muddy.
🍽 Food
Try the traditional smoked or pan-fried carp, a local specialty often served with garlic and parsley marinades in Virpazar.
The Crmnica region around the lake is famous for its Vranac red wine; visit a family-run winery in the nearby villages.
A small, tasty fish endemic to the lake, usually sun-dried or smoked and served as a delicious meze.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy directly from local winemakers in the Crmnica region; many sell bottles directly from their cellars.
In winter and spring, you can buy strings of dried Ukljeva at the local market in Virpazar.
A peaceful pebble beach on the southern shore with clear water and far fewer tourists than Virpazar.
A quiet find of a village with old stone mills and small waterfalls, accessible via a narrow road.
Take a walk along the river near this historic town; it's highly photogenic and much calmer in the early morning.

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, straddling the border between Montenegro and Albania. The Montenegrin part was designated a national park in 1983 and is a major European bird sanctuary, home to over 280 species, including the rare Dalmatian Pelican. The lake's surface is famous for its vast carpets of water lilies and historic island monasteries. One of the most photographed spots in the country is the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, showcasing a horseshoe-shaped river bend winding around green hills. Boat tours departing from Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevića are the best way to explore the lake's hidden coves and medieval ruins. The surrounding Crmnica region is the birthplace of Montenegrin winemaking, celebrated for its robust red Vranac wine. Visitors should sample local smoked carp and eel, typical delicacies of the lakeside villages. Located just a short drive from Podgorica or the coastal town of Bar, the lake is easily accessible. The best time to visit is from April to October, with May and June being peak months for birdwatching and seeing lilies in bloom.
