Vračina Gora Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Vranjina Monastery, often referred to as Vračina Gora, is located on the island of the same name within Lake Skadar and stands as one of Montenegro's oldest spiritual centers. It was founded in the 13th century, likely around 1223, by Ilarion, the first Bishop of Zeta and a disciple of Saint Sava. For centuries, the monastery served as a significant religious and political hub, particularly during the reign of the Crnojević dynasty in the 15th century. The complex consists of the Church of Saint Nicholas and several residential buildings strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the lake. Throughout history, the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times by the Ottomans, with the most recent restoration occurring in the 19th century under Prince Nikola I Petrović. Today, it is a serene place of prayer, characterized by its isolated location and the untouched nature of Lake Skadar National Park. The monastery preserves valuable memories of the medieval history of the Zeta state.
