Lake
Lake Shkodër is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, straddling the border between Albania and Montenegro. Its surface area fluctuates seasonally between 370 and 530 square kilometers, with roughly one-third of the basin located within Albanian territory. Geographically, it is a karst lake linked to the Adriatic Sea via the Buna River. The lake has been designated as a Ramsar site since 1991, highlighting its international importance as a wetland habitat for over 280 bird species, most notably the rare Dalmatian pelican. Its waters are exceptionally rich in fish, with the Shkodër carp and bleak being vital to the local economy and traditional cuisine.
