Ćelija Piperska Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Ćelija Piperska Monastery is perched on a prominent cliff above the village of Crnci, near Podgorica. It was founded in 1637 by Saint Stefan of Piperi, who led an ascetic life there and whose relics are preserved in the monastery to this day. The complex consists of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, monastic cells, and a bell tower. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the monastery was a vital spiritual center for the Piperi tribe and a site for planning liberation struggles. Due to its strategic and symbolic significance, it was repeatedly targeted by Ottoman forces but remained an integral part of Montenegrin identity. In modern times, Ćelija Piperska is an active nunnery, known for its traditional embroidery and the production of natural herbal remedies. The location features wide views over the Zeta Valley and provides a serene environment for spiritual reflection and historical discovery.
