Doclea (Montenegro)

Weather…

Doclea, also known as Duklja, is the most prominent Roman archaeological site in Montenegro, located just a few kilometers north of the modern capital, Podgorica. Founded in the 1st century AD, the city rapidly became the administrative and economic hub of the Roman province of Praevalitana. At its peak in the 4th century, Doclea housed between 8,000 and 10,000 residents and featured impressive thermal baths, a forum, temples, and a sophisticated sewage system. Legend holds that the city was the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, adding to its historical prestige. Severe earthquakes in the 6th century, followed by Slavic and Avar invasions, eventually led to the city's downfall. Today, visitors can explore the foundations of monumental structures and intricate mosaics that provide a fascinating window into ancient urban life near the Adriatic coast.
