Zlatica Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Zlatica Monastery, located on the outskirts of Podgorica in the Doljani district, is one of Montenegro's most significant early Christian archaeological sites. The complex dates back to the late Roman and early Christian periods, specifically the 4th to 6th centuries, when it was part of the ancient Doclea region. Excavations have revealed the remains of two basilicas: a large three-aisled basilica and a smaller triconch church. Zlatica served as a major episcopal center in the early Middle Ages, evidenced by the discovery of a magnificent baptismal font. During Bulgarian and later Ottoman invasions, the complex was destroyed and forgotten for centuries. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that the ruins were systematically studied and conserved. Today, the site serves as both a historical monument and a renewed place of worship with a modern monastery built nearby. The ruins testify to the deep-seated roots of Christianity in this region since late antiquity.
