Ancient Risan (Montenegro)

Weather…

Risan, the ancient Rhizon, is the oldest settlement in the Bay of Kotor, with a history dating back to the 4th century BC. It was once the capital of the Illyrian Ardiaei tribe and served as a refuge for the legendary Queen Teuta during the wars against the Roman Empire. Following the Roman conquest in 168 BC, Rhizon developed into a thriving commercial center featuring magnificent villas and temples. The most significant archaeological heritage from this period consists of Roman mosaics from the 2nd century AD, including a globally rare depiction of Hypnos, the god of sleep. The ancient city was renowned for its fortifications and its location at the end of the deep fjord, which protected it from pirate attacks. Today, visitors can tour carefully restored mosaics and the remains of the ancient street layouts. Risan remains a fascinating destination for anyone interested in classical antiquity and Illyrian culture.
