Risan

Risan is positioned in the innermost part of the Bay of Kotor and is widely recognized as the region's oldest settlement. Its history stretches back to the 3rd century BC when it served as the Illyrian capital under the formidable Queen Teuta. The primary draw for modern visitors is the collection of 2nd-century Roman mosaics found within the remains of an ancient villa. Most notably, it houses the only known mosaic depiction of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep, making it a site of significant archaeological importance. The town's layout features traditional stone buildings and the historic Gabela Street, which still retains its medieval paving and old-world charm. Surrounded by the steep cliffs of the Orjen mountain range, Risan has a dramatic backdrop for seaside walks and exploration. It remains significantly quieter than nearby Kotor or Perast, providing a more authentic and peaceful experience for travelers. Local dining emphasizes fresh seafood and mountain cheeses, best enjoyed in the small taverns along the harbor. Risan is also an excellent starting point for hiking trips into the surrounding limestone peaks.
