The Stefan Voda Plateau extends across southeastern Moldova, forming a plain that slopes gently towards the Dniester Liman. Geomorphologically, this region is part of the Lower Dniester Plateau and is characterized by a moderate relief with wide, open spaces. Geologically, the plateau is dominated by sandy-loam soils overlying Miocene marine deposits. The region is globally renowned for its unique wine-growing areas, particularly the Purcari microzone, where soil composition and climate provide well-suited conditions for high-quality red wines. Historically, the plateau was a strategically important transit area near the mouth of the Dniester into the Black Sea. The landscape is marked by extensive vineyards alternating with grain fields. Due to its proximity to the Dniester Delta and wetlands, the microclimate is milder than in the rest of southern Moldova, allowing for rich biodiversity, especially in birdlife, in the peripheral areas.
