Purcari Castle

Purcari Castle, located in the Ștefan Vodă district, is the oldest wine estate in Moldova, officially founded in 1827. The terroir near the Dniester River provides unique microclimatic conditions and soil composition comparable to the Bordeaux region in France, making it good for high-quality viticulture. In 1878, the estate achieved international fame when its Negru de Purcari wine won the gold medal at the Paris World Expo, marking a milestone for regional winemaking. The chateau features extensive historical cellars built in the late 19th century, which maintain a constant temperature for the aging of premium reserve wines. Today, the estate spans over 250 hectares of vineyards and serves as a major center for wine tourism and the preservation of national heritage. It remains one of the few places where traditional 19th-century production methods are seamlessly combined with modern oenological technology.
