Codru Highlands (Moldova)

Weather…

The Codru Highlands in central Moldova are the country's most prominent relief region and form the ecological heart of the nation. Spanning a vast area between the Răut and Prut rivers, they reach a maximum elevation of approximately 430 meters at Bălănești Hill. The landscape is characterized by a dense network of deeply incised valleys, steep slopes, and plateau-like crests, formed through intensive erosive processes. Historically, the entire highland was covered by dense deciduous forests known as 'Codri,' composed of oak, beech, and hornbeam trees. These forests played a crucial role in Moldovan history, serving as a refuge during times of war. Today, the highlands house several important nature reserves, including the Codru Reserve, the oldest in the country. The region is known not only for its biodiversity but also for its influence on the local climate, being the most humid and coolest zone in Moldova.
