Călărași Monastery (Moldova)

Weather…

Hîrjauca Monastery, frequently associated with the Călărași district, was founded in 1740 within the dense forests of the Codru region. Originally established as a small wooden hermitage, it underwent significant expansion in the early 19th century when the primary stone structures were built in the Neoclassical style. The main church, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, is distinguished by its grand colonnades and spacious interior, reflecting the architectural trends of the Russian Empire era. Throughout its history, the monastery functioned as a spiritual and educational hub for central Moldova. During the Soviet period, it was secularized and converted into a health resort (sanatorium), which altered much of its original interior. Since its reopening in 1993, the monastery has been meticulously restored to its former religious and cultural prominence.
