Culmea Valea Mare is a prominent ridge in west-central Moldova, near the town of Ungheni and the Prut River. This ridge is part of the Central Moldavian Plateau, also known as Codri, and is among the highest elevations in the country, with peaks exceeding 300 meters. The geology is characterized by thick layers of clay and loam deposited during the Tertiary period. Much of the elevation is covered by dense deciduous forests dominated by oak, beech, and hornbeam, making it a major biodiversity hotspot. The ridge acts as a watershed between various tributaries of the Prut and significantly influences the local drainage regime. Due to its exposed position, Culmea Valea Mare has extensive views over the Prut Valley and has been historically used as a strategic point for monitoring the border region. The steep slopes are terraced in places to allow the cultivation of fruit trees and vines in this climatically favored zone.
