The Codru Scientific Reserve, established in 1971, is the oldest nature reserve in the Republic of Moldova. It spans an area of approximately 5,177 hectares in the central part of the country, near the village of Lozova in the Strășeni District. The topography is defined by the Central Moldavian Plateau, featuring deep ravines and rolling hills that support a rich biodiversity. The forests consist primarily of oak, beech, and hornbeam, with over 1,000 species of vascular plants documented within its borders. The reserve serves as a critical habitat for the European wildcat, pine marten, and more than 140 bird species. Best season
The Codru Scientific Reserve is most beautiful in spring (April-May), when the forests shine in fresh green and migratory birds return. Autumn (September-October) gives spectacular foliage colors and is also highly recommended.
Best time of day
Morning hours are good for birdwatching, as bird song is most intense then. Late afternoon, when sunlight filters through the canopy, wildlife such as deer and wild boar are often active.
Etiquette
Entry to the reserve is only allowed with a special permit, as it is a scientific protected area. Stay on marked trails and do not disturb wildlife - avoid loud noises and fires.
What to bring
Sturdy footwear is necessary due to forest trails and possible wet areas in the reserve. Binoculars and a field guide for birds and plants are very helpful for exploration.
Getting there
The Codru Scientific Reserve is located about 50 kilometers west of Chișinău near the village of Codru. It is accessible via the M1 road and then a gravel road; the permit must be applied in advance from the authorities.
What to expect
As the reserve is used for scientific purposes, wildlife is shy and not accustomed to humans - quiet movement and long waits are necessary. Hide in a suitable spot and remain absolutely still; the reward may be a rare sighting of a timid animal.
