Best season
Pakin Atoll gives spectacular coral formations year-round, but the best underwater visibility is from December to April. During the rainy season from June to October, visibility may be reduced by plankton.
Best time of day
The hours after sunrise provide the clearest water and best light for coral photography. Late morning is good for snorkeling as the sun is high enough to illuminate the reefs.
Etiquette
Corals are very sensitive - avoid any contact with hands or fins. Use reef-safe sunscreen and do not wear gloves that could damage the corals.
What to bring
A high-quality dive mask with wide field of view is recommended for exploring coral reefs. A dive computer and an underwater camera with macro lens are well-suited for close-up shots.
Getting there
Pakin Atoll lies southeast of Pohnpei and is reachable by boat in about 30-60 minutes. Daily tours are offered by local dive centers on Pohnpei.
