Oroluk Atoll (Micronesia)

Weather…

Oroluk Atoll is one of the most remote and pristine maritime environments in the Federated States of Micronesia, lying roughly 300 kilometers west of Pohnpei. The atoll features a massive central lagoon rimmed by a bustling coral reef, with Oroluk Island at its northwestern tip being the only permanently vegetated landmass. Designated as a marine sanctuary in 1999, it is globally recognized as a critical nesting site for the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), which thrives in the absence of human interference. The surrounding reef system is exceptionally healthy, supporting an abundance of sharks, groupers, and rare invertebrates that have disappeared elsewhere. Large colonies of nesting seabirds, including boobies and frigatebirds, dominate the skies over the island. Historically, the atoll’s treacherous reefs were the site of numerous shipwrecks during the Spanish and German colonial eras, and the clear lagoon waters still hold the silent remains of these maritime explorers, now encrusted with ancient coral growth.
