Ouadane Fortification (Mauritania)

Weather…

The fortification of Ouadane is a magnificent relic of the trans-Saharan trade era and a cornerstone of Mauritania's UNESCO World Heritage status. Founded in 1147 by the Idalwa el Hadji tribe, this ancient ksar (fortified city) was built on a rocky plateau of the Adrar region to serve as a vital staging post for caravans traveling between North and West Africa. Its imposing stone walls and defensive layout were essential for protecting wealth in the form of gold, salt, and precious manuscripts from desert raiders. The dry-stone architecture, characterized by narrow, shaded alleyways and multi-story structures, reflects a deep understanding of Saharan climate and security needs. Today, wandering through the ruins of the old town allows visitors to visualize the period when Ouadane was a center of Islamic scholarship and commercial prosperity. The site remains a powerful symbol of historical Mauritanian endurance, overlooking the vast, shifting sands of the Sahara desert.
