Zouérat-Nord is the northern expansion sector of Zouérat, Mauritania's premier mining city and a critical pillar of the national economy. Located in the far north of the country, the town sits at the foot of the Kédia d'Idjil, the nation's highest peak, which is famously composed almost entirely of high-grade iron ore. This northern district was developed to provide modern housing and amenities for the thousands of employees of the state mining giant, SNIM. The region's identity is defined by the massive open-pit iron mines and the constant hum of industrial activity. Most notably, this area is the terminal for the world-famous Mauritania Railway, featuring trains that can stretch up to 2.5 kilometers in length, transporting iron ore over 700 kilometers through the Sahara Desert to the Atlantic coast at Nouadhibou. Life in Zouérat-Nord is dictated by the rhythms of the mining industry and the challenges of a hyper-arid Saharan climate, where sandstorms and extreme temperatures are part of daily existence. Despite its industrial focus, the city serves as a unique gateway for those interested in the grand scale of desert engineering and the raw beauty of the northern Saharan frontier.
